As The Days Go By

My performance piece is a collective of monologues from the point of view of a college student (around the age of 17) who is trying to cope with the current situation we are all facing. I decided to base it around the perspective of someone within my age range, as I wanted to make it relatable. I asked a group of people that are my age their opinions and feelings towards lockdown to incorporate into my piece. I also made the entire performance seem like I am on the phone to a friend, which was inspired by all the times I called someone to complain about how I’m feeling during quarantine. This also allowed me to include my own perspective into the piece. The performance overall is mainly positive, as I feel like there is already enough negativity that surrounds this topic. Within my performance, I show the progression of the students mindset towards the lockdown and how her view shifts as time goes by. There are four sections all together:

  •  The beginning where the student feels lost and confused because of everything that is going on as well as struggling with family issues and keeping up with college work.

  • The second section is also more on the negative side as she is falling deeper into a pit of boredom and self pity, she feels unproductive and is facing a lot of struggles at home that she feels like she is unable to cope with.

  • The third section is where she starts to realise the positive aspects of the situation and starts to feel better about herself. She starts looking at the situation more optimistically as she uses this time to start discovering herself.

  • By the last section, she has a very positive outlook on the situation and has finally realised that everything that is happening might be a blessing in disguise! She learns how to manage through everything that is going on and get past the struggle.

I found working from home to be challenging in many ways as it was new to me. I tried my best to keep organised and on track, just to make things easier and make sure that I’m not getting too stressed. What I found the hardest was staying motivated the whole time but I overcame that by creating a routine for myself as well as taking short breaks which really helped. I also felt limited in some ways but tried my best to create something that is of a good, professional standard to the best of my ability. Overall, I think I managed pretty well and even though I faced some difficulties at times,  the final outcome is something that I am proud of.
